World Series Baseball Starring Deion Sanders (Sega Genesis 32X) Review

World Series Baseball Starring Deion Sanders (Sega Genesis 32X)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
World Series Baseball starring Deion Sanders is truly one of the only games worth playing on the 32X. The fact that it "stars" Neon Deion really has no impact on the game...he is merely an average player in the game with great speed.
Graphics: Solid for a game that was released in 1995. The pitcher/batter interface boasted excellent background views of each stadium. When the ball was in play the stadiums were, for the most part, faithfully rendered as well. While the pitcher/batter interface provided detailed animation, graphics with the ball in play were average at best.
Sound: Definitely a weak spot for the game. Little music is present, and the crowd noises were muffled. It was best to play this with the sound off, as the constant chatter of the crowd between pitches was like the sound of locusts buzzing around my head. WSB did provide with some nice announcer effects, such as, "Now batting, the right fielder." Were you expecting all player names to be present? Not in 1995.
Gameplay: Nothing stands out as incredibly good or bad....simply solid. It was best to have the computer assisted fielding turned on to help eliminate the majority of fielding gaffes. This was one of the first games to allow a player to control the difficulty of hitting by way of differing swing mechanics at advanced levels. At its easiest, a player either pressed one button for a normal swing or another button for a power swing. The most difficult setting required a player to aim where the pitch would cross the plate, similar to what current gen baseball games provide. This was definitely an innovation at the time. However, for simplicity sake I most often played with the simple one button swing.
Features: WSB was ahead of its time in allowing a Fantasy Draft when playing full season mode. This added an element of strategy when building a team that was unrivaled until the advent of GM modes with free agency & amateur drafts. Unfortunately it was too easy to draft a team filled with major power hitters, thus making wins virtually assured. WSB allowed a full 162 game season to be played, and it was helpful that a player could simulate to any point in the season. My preference was to play 1 out of every 3 or 4 games to speed the season along. Full stat tracking was provided, and the player statistics page was presented in a user friendly view. Viewing player statistics was similar to looking at a player's baseball card, with most relevant stats easily visible. Also included was an easy home run derby mode, but that was unremarkable and tedious.
World Series Baseball suffered from one serious bug. If a runner was advancing to the plate when a fly ball was caught for the 3rd out in an inning, the AI counted the run. While I typically won most games by 5 or more runs, this bug could affect the outcome of a rare nail biting contest.
Overall World Series Baseball was one of the best titles released on the notorious 32X. Too bad it suffered the same fate as the majority of 32X games: ports from the Genesis with slightly improved graphics & little reason to purchase the 32X add on for $150 when it was first released.
It is ironic that WSB "starred" Deion Sanders, because this game was the complete opposite of Deion....nothing flashy. Any person who misses the likes of Wade Boggs, Kirby Puckett & Cal Ripken can relive their favorite players' time in the majors by picking up this game. A solid 4 star game.

Let me start off by saying this game is awesome. It is a ton of fun to play and really holds true to college baseball. It doesn't really have any major problems, the gameplay is simple and can easily be picked up by anyone. It really is a shame that the game didn't sell well and that ea lost its rights to major leagues, nonetheless you will enjoy this game I highly recommend it to any college baseball fan.

This game is one of my favorites even though it is probably the older games created on the SEGA but it still is fun. The graphics of the game aren't as good as some of the later games but in the end its alot of fun. It's like your a kid back at the arcade room all over again. A Classic.
If you can get this game for cheap, you should consider getting it.
Pros: Fun, simple controls, 2-player.
Cons: Earlier graphics, challenging at times.

R.B.I. Baseball 3 Review

R.B.I. Baseball 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although its graphics are archaic by today's standards, RBI Baseball for the original NES continues to provide me and my friends countless hours of entertainment and competitive action. The game has several modes of play to choose from, including watch mode. And while playing against the computer quickly becomes tiresome, the game's two-player mode is what gives it its alluring feel and makes it a classic. Thanks to a few subtle changes from real baseball (such as the 16-man rosters that limit each team to 4 pitchers and 4 position players off the bench), the two-player game has a great deal of strategy to it. In addition, each player is highly individualized and has his own feel. The small crew of Japanese game developers who programmed RBI Baseball back in the late 1980s had remarkable foresight and true understanding of baseball as they were able to create a simple game that has withstood the test of time.
The game showcases heavy hitters like Reggie Jackson, Will Clark, and Andre Dawson as well as aces Nolan Ryan, Fernando Valenzuela, and Mike Krukow. There are also players like Jose Canseco and Roger Clemens who display superhuman batting and pitching ability, even in the world of RBI Baseball. The game-play is surprisingly accurate and reflects the true nature of baseball in that almost any player can affect the outcome of the game. With a skilled gamer, a nobody like Bruce Hurst can have the same type of impact as a Roger Clemens. The quirks to this game are like no other - these are things like tandem fielding, cocked bats, and the catch and pose, to name a few. No game is perfect, but the glitches in RBI Baseball are such fan favorites, that there is speculation to whether they were intentionally injected into the game. Such glitches include bunting an inside the park homerun, having a fielder run into the stands, and snowfall!
5 stars to the greatest two-player sports game of the NES era (and perhaps ever!).

All Star Baseball 2003 Review

All Star Baseball 2003
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been a huge fan of the All Star Baseball series for quite some time now. I have incredibly fond memories of ASB 2000 and 2001 for the N64. They were the Ali of Baseball Sims. The best. 2000 was great, and 2001 was even better!
Then, the ground fell out.
ASB 2002 for the PS2 was a travesty! A pure, unadulterated travesty. They destroyed the magnificent batting system...Your outfielders ran like they were in tar...and the games took way too long to play.
Now, ASB 2003 is out, which I have played on both GameCube and the PS2. It's better than ASB 2002, but not by much. ASB 2002 gets one star...ASB 2003 gets two.
The batting interface was improved since 2002, but still not as great as 2000 or 2001. At least now you have variable speeds. There's one problem, you CAN'T HIT THE BALL. The pitches...ALL OF THE PITCHES...are too fast. You can either move or swing. You don't have time for both.
Well, they fixed the problems with outfielders running speed. Now they run faster than light! Nice and realistic. I hit (when I luckily make contact with the ball) the ball to someplace there is nobody, within in a milisecond, BOOM, there's an outfielder. It's crazy.
The announcers rarely actually say anything useful, and are sometimes outright wrong. For example, I had a man on first, two men out, and I struck out. "He strikes out with bases loaded!" Ummm, I never even got to second, let alone third. Furthermore, there's no umpire. I never know when I've pitched a strike or a ball until the display comes back up.
What I did like: The graphics. They were great. That's about it.
Save your money for ASB 2004, maybe. Why do video game companies do this? Acclaim had the best baseball game ever, and now they have the worst. How does that happen?

MLB 07: The Show Review

MLB 07: The Show
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had that other baseball game (2K7) but did not like the out of focus look. For example when you are at the plate, the stands in the outfield are blurry and out of focus. I hated that so much that I sold the game right away. That also happens when the camera is on the batter. In that case, the fans in the stands to the sides and back of home plate are very blurry looking. I know that happens in real games but it looked dumb in a video game and should have been left out.
Compared to 2K7, MLB The Show has better graphics, better animations and an a very adequate play-by-play team. It was easy to get into the game play also. I only played a couple of games but I liked what I saw heard and liked the control scheme. A couple of things bugged me though. First, I once had MLB 05 on the PS2 and when you hit a home run, you would get fireworks and/or animation from objects like the rising apple in NY, the swinging bell in Philly or the rotating pin wheels and fireworks in White Sox Park (I know it's Cellular Field but I prefer to call it White Sox Park). In the PS3 version, I didn't see any of that and was very dissapointed. How can they have it in a lesser version and not include it in the latest generation machine's software. Did someone forget to put it in? It takes some of the fun out of hitting home runs. Also, the AI (artificial intelligence) can be suspect. I had a man on third and a ball was hit to the first baseman. Instead of trying to cut down the runner at the plate, he instead ran to touch first base to get the hitter and then threw to home. As a result the run scored when it should have been contested. I've heard of other like mistakes and while no video game yet has proved to be perfect those are mistakes that should have been corrected in testing.
The crowd in this game looks great from every angle and is the best looking crown in any major sports video game. I read promotional material that said the crowd would interact by going for foul balls but that must have not made the final cut as I didn't see any instance where that happened. I hope they put back the fireworks and animations for home runs and implement the interactive crowd animation for chasing foul balls in next years game. Otherwise between this and the only other game in town (2K7), I would pick MLB The Show 07 for the PS3.

Though this game is very old and outdated, this is still a classic baseball game in my books. You can spend hours opon hours playing a season, listening to the sounds when a ball is hit, and watching the foul balls bounce on the people's heads. This game is a collectors item so when I tryed getting it at a toystore, I was told it was worth [a lot]! This game is definatly worth that kind of money but you can buy it on Amazon.com for [less].

For most of us who grew up with the NES, MLB was a standard. While the game play is simplistic, the game offers multiple batting and pitching options and the ability to choose the lineups. There's not a better baseball game in my opinion for being able to nail the computer with home run after home run. Good times. If you never played this, check it out.

High Heat Major League Baseball 2003

While i was very dissapointed with last years high heat, this years version surprised me (and yes i do actually own it). Gameplay and graphics are much improved and the announcers voices were crisp and clean. I was also surprised to see that the rosters were also as up to date as they could be (i.e. Juan Gonzalez on Texas). This is also not an "arcade" style baseball game, stats are pretty accurate like real MLB is and you aren't hitting hr's every other ab. So all in all it's a pretty good game, 4 star rating for a lack of "franchise mode", but do you really want to keep playing after 162 games anyways? Buy it and i think you'll be surprised in a good way.

With its satisfyingly realistic gameplay firmly intact, this year'sentry in 3DO's High Heat series cements its status as arguably the best videogame baseball experience available. Graphically, it's better than ever, but whatsets High Heat Major League Baseball 2003 apart from the competition isits attention to the little things that make it more believable and fun to play:hits that are random and rarely appear to fall in the same place twice; scoresthat accurately reflect the caliber of the opposing pitcher; razor-close playson the base paths and at home plate--the list goes on. Add in wide-ranging,customizable player skill levels and game-tuning preferences (everything frombatting and throwing power to error and injury frequency)--not to mention theyear of fine-tuning under 3DO's belt after working out the kinks in lastseason's inaugural PS2 run--and it all adds up to a rewarding experience forbaseball gaming purists.
That's not to say the game is perfect, as witnessed by graphics that could stilluse some work to fully exploit the PS2's capabilities. Especially lacking arethe dugout and crowd animations that at times resemble lifeless gray masses.Certain stadium skylines also lack depth, particularly in night games (tallbuildings behind the stadiums look a lot like their blocky counterparts fromlast year's version). But these are minor gripes when all is said and done. Allthe vitals are still there: season, playoff, and exhibition modes (no franchisemode yet, however); home run derby; batting practice; and, new this year, thetwo-on-two showdown that features a one-inning battle pitting pitcher againstbatter. And while the game's rosters are nowhere near what they'll be on openingday, the create and edit player features will ensure that everybody's favoriteteam can be as accurate as the real thing. --Larry White
Pros:
Unparalleled gameplay realism
Improved graphics

Little League 2009 is the sequel to Little League 2008 and I have both and 2009 is way better. All of the graphics are a lot better and improved and theres like 100 teams to choose from all over world. Pitching is same as last year, but batting is way different and easier. I didnt understand batting at first but the training really helps explain it and its much easier to hit exactly where you wan tto go with the ball. 2009 is easier than 2008 except for the tournament and that gets pretty hard (I aint beat the world series yet.) 2008 was a really good game but 2009 is even better.

All Star Baseball 2004 Review

All Star Baseball 2004
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have played All-Star Baseball since N64 and this is by far the best to date. After the terrible 2002 and the improved-but-rough 2003 installments, this one is a pleasant surprise!
Gameplay:
The best feature is the much, much deeper FRANCHISE MODE, which follows the option/waiver rule--you can't just move players up and down the major and minor as you please-if a player has no more option left, you have to pass him through waiver, and likely some other teams will pick him up. You can also control the 40-man roster, trading block (let other teams know who you are interested in trading), sign long-term contract DURING the season, decide on coaching, scouting budgets, and high-and-low minor leagues.
In-game features:
The main gameplay is pretty much the same as 2003, but many details has been inproved.
INSTANT REPLAY: TV-like angles with more than a dozen to choose from and whenever you want, even to see if a check-swing has gone too far!
CHECK-SWING, REALISTIC ERRORS, EJECTION, CATCHER STOPS THE HITTER FROM CHARGING THE MOUNT, and OFF-THE-LINE THROWS: They probably learned quite a bit from High Heat Baseball, but it looks so much better.
MOUNT VISIT: Shows the condition of your pitcher (rattled, fatigued, etc.) and the coach's suggestion.
BETTER A.I.: It's much harder to get a triple because the CPU finally has learned not to throw everything to the second base from the outfield. CPU's pitching has also become tougher and it's possible to draw lots of walk if you are patient.
BETTER GRAPHIC: It's no Slugfest, but overall it's much cleaner and some faces are really life-like. Also the batter's head will follow the ball in the HR replay.
FASTER PACE: Again, don't expect the pace like Slugfest, but this is much finer gameplay.
Few things to complain about:
SLIGHTLY OLD LINEUP: I wish they could have waited for a month so they could at least include Matsui. If anyone can find Kevin Miller please tell me!
SOUND: Very minimum crowd noise and effect. The commentary is somewhat dry and repetitive. But VERY GOOD voices of the umpires (they are different).
ONLY ONE BATTING/HITTING CAMERA: There are simply no option to change this.
CPU Hitting: is a bit weak and too selective in general.
BASE STEALING: Too easy, as long as the pitcher does not use slide move. And many never do.
EJECTION: You can choose to pitch "bean ball" (usually above the neck) and that pretty much means ejection. But there are quite a few time I pressed the button (R1) by mistake--because R1 was the button to get a closer look at the runner on first for previous All-Star games--and was ejected in the first inning and had to start over. Also if you pitch very inside just twice, it's an ejection. Your hitter might also get hot too easy after being hit, and that also result in ejection. I think it's too sensitive.
LOOK ALIKE: Most players are not so different from each other in the batting box or pitching mount, but so do many other games. And you don't get the ritual dance of Nomar!

MLB 08 The Show
Average Reviews:

I was a huge fan of MLB The Show 07, and didn't think Sony could really improve upon itself. Boy was I wrong! Here are just some of the improvements made.....
1. Improved graphics - not as much of a cartoony look. Amazing looking fields, background animation (people playing with beach balls in the stands, just as examples) And this time people actually go for foul balls hit into the stands.
2. Improved stats - This game track EVERYTHING, including how your player fares at the plate with various pitches, locations, pitchers, etc. It also has a better "training" mode in my opinion. Similiar to last year's, but a little more specific.
3. You can import your own soundtrack to play in the game. And the manual makes it very easy to do so.
The only thing that I found that was a negative so far is when you are fielding. If the batter takes a ball or strike, many times the at-bat starts over, with a 0-0 count.
They did say that you can play an entire game, and even save the game before a full game is completed. However, this DOES NOT APPLY to the "Road to the Show" mode.
If you want a baseball game that is realistic in just about every aspect, you need to buy this game. I played 07 until today, when I bought 08. And I am certain I will be playing this one until 09 comes out.

We bought this game for like $9.99 at Best Buy the other day and it actually ROCKS! It is alot of fun and brings out your competitive side! You can be lots of different teams and there's lots of different options to choose from. The only thing that we have noticed so far that STINKS is the fact that the game uses WAY WAY too much commentary so it takes alot longer to play. The good news is that you can chop the commentary down ALOT. If you like sports VG's, especially baseball ones, then definitely give this one a shot.

Backyard Baseball for PlayStation 2 Review

Backyard Baseball for PlayStation 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game is really and truly fun to play and I think kids of ALL ages will enjoy it. It's the most fun I've had playing a video baseball game since "RBI BASEBALL" for the Sega Genisus.
You play as either big name pros as kids (Sammy Sosa, A-Rod, Derek Jeter, Randy Johnson, Greg Maddux, Mike Piazza) or a selection of cute backyard kids (one kid's in a wheelchair) in a series of nice looking 3-D ballparks such as a junkyard, a drive-in theater, a desert, a glass dome underwater and more ( 11 in all, 3 locked as you start the game). The controls are a bit hard to learn with a lot of things to memorize but with practice you'll be playing like a pro after only a couple of games.
There is season play mode (16 or 32 games, with a mid-season all-star game and playoffs and world series) or single game mode. Mini-games (Home Run Derby, Fielding Practice) are also included. There is also complete stat tracking in season play mode.
The graphics are quite nice. The parks look great with cars and trucks driving by on the streets, birds flying overhead, alligators in the water of the park in the swamp (Gator Fields), and crowd noises, etc. The players also look very nice. They may be too cute for some but if you liked the characters in the "HOT SHOTS GOLF" series, you should like these guys and gals. I like the kid in the wheelchair (Kenny Kawaguichi). He's a great leadoff hitter with lots of speed. He leads the league in stolen bases (31) after only 17 games!!!
Once you learn the controls the game is maybe too easy on rookie mode, but there are two harder modes that give you more of a challenge.
The only negative I can find in the game is the very repetitive play-by-play by the two cartoon announcers and the various phrases the players repeat over and over again. But some of it is funny, and after a season and a half of play, I really have gotten used to the inane chatter ( which, I believe, can be turned off if you wish). But this shouldn't deter you from this game.
In conclusion, I recommend this game most highly. It is fun to play and looks quite nice and that is all one can ask for in a game. Try it, I think you'll like it! -George Bauch.
