It doesn't get any better than this! This is game you want for awesome realism and just plain fun. Released in 1995, this game was ahead of its time, rivaling even those released this year!

All Star Baseball 2001 Review

All Star Baseball 2001
Average Reviews:

I guess it would have been too much to hope for thinking theGameBoy version would be as good as it's N64 brother, which may be thebest sports game on any console. The GameBoy either doesn't have the power or Acclaim just couldn't pull it off. Maybe a little of both. I guess I should have been worried when I saw the game was not backed up by a battery. Instead you have to deal with the dreaded password. Acclaim's website was very misleading in the sense it lists this games features in the same breath with the N64 version. All the stadiums are not reproduced, there is only one generic one. Trades are not possible. Although the box boasts 100 different batting stances I have seen only the same few all the time. There is no tracking of season stats, other than standings. All the players are one race it would seem. The sound effects are poor and the constant organ music drives you bats (no pun intended). The batting interface is an exercise in futility. It's near impossible to string hits together and all the scoring in the games I have played by both sides are homers. Fielders seem superhuman making hits even more difficult. There is also almost no way to tell balls and strikes. Pitches off the plate are called strikes and some crossing the plate are balls. Forget about drawing any walks. The pitching interface though I do like, although pitchers realistically have only 4 pitches not 8, which means there is no difference between Rnady Johnson, a flamethrower, and Greg Maddux, a finesse pitcher. They both have the same pitches. The more I play may prove me wrong but all players seem to have the same abilities making it seem like even the worst hitter in the lineup can be Mark McGwire. Stealing bases is near impossible and pickoffs are too frequent. The bullpen mode is nice but how come you can tell when a reliever is ready but not know when the in-game pitcher is tired? I could find no way to tell this so I guess you have to assume 6 or 7 innings is enough work, although one pitcher I faced pitched 11 innings! I think the fielding interface is fine, although when you adjust fielders against a batter I wish they would return to default once he is out or on base. You could literally play at double play depth or outfielders playing in by mistake the whole game. There is one positive though. You do have Major League rosters and a Hall of Fame squad. I was disappointed in this game but I haven't given up. I will continue playing and hope to uncover some silver lining. Sorry Acclaim.

For it's one, two, three strikes--you're out in All-Star Baseball 2001 for the Game Boy Color. Smell the freshly cut grass, pine tar, and foot-longs as you take the field with any one of the 30 Major League teams. Be sure to hone those batting skills in the Batting Practice mode. As player/manager, you'll bat and pitch for the team, as well as make the hard decisions about which players (over 700 of them) get traded, called up from the farm team, or sent back down. If you're really in for a clash of the titans, try the Cooperstown Hall of Fame team, which includes recent inductees Reggie Jackson and Nolan Ryan.

High Heat Baseball 2000 Review

High Heat Baseball 2000
Average Reviews:

To be honest... I think that this game when compared to the others is one of the best (if not the best) games on the market. I mean it has it all: all the teams with all the stadiums (even the new ones like Safeco field and Pacific Bell Park(which isn't even open yet)) with all the players. Plus there's some older, nostagic stadiums like the Polo Grounds and Ebbets field and even some spring training (practice) stadiums. You can do everything you can think of (including move your home stadium and completely change your lineup and rotation). There's also a complete list of free agents and a complete minor league farm system where you can draft and develop players. You can cut, send down, bring up, etc. players anytime (and its fun doing it too). The problem, however, that I experienced was it is a pain to get to work. There are many files and programs which the game needs to work... ones that aren't mentioned anyhere. Also, you have to make sure you have the updated version for all your drivers (audio, video, etc). To be honest, it was a complete hassle to get this game working and is not worth it in the end... epecially since a better game will come out soon anyway. In short, only get this game if you are patient or completely know how to reconfigure your system.

Triple play has the realism that you'd want in your playstation game. Levels range from novice, in which the computer helps with the steals and pitching techniques, to pro to all-stars; in the latter two levels you'll have to do your own stealing. My favorite is the home-run durby in which you can compete to see who the real power hitter is. It's one of the best Baseball games i've played so far. There are numerous amounts of secret codes you can get from on-line that'll make the game more interesting. I'll highly recommed getting this game.

It took my 4 year old a little time to get used to how this game works - but he loves it and still plays it often. It's easy to take on the road too - for beach trips or places where there aren't other game choices or even good TV signals. We have a Wii now - so this isn't getting as much play time now - but I bet he goes back to it soon.

Backyard Football Review

Backyard Football
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Boys and girls (and their parents--believe me!) will love this fun, exciting football game from Humongous Entertainment. It features characters familiar from other "Jr. Sports League" series: Easy-going Keisha, lightening-fast Pete, and others of different ages, races, sizes, and abilities.
The action is fast and the selection of plays is great fun (you can also create your own plays!). Passing plays are the most difficult; you might want to encourage your child to focus on running, kicking, and defense, and help him or her with passing. (Our 5-year old eventually got the hang of the whole game). You can set 3 difficulty levels, play a league series culminating in a the "Super-Colossal Cereal Bowl" or play single "pick-up" games, play in preset or random weather conditions, and even make up your own player with different skills (it's fun to name this player after yourself)!
A few complaints: Once again, Pete Wheeler is the athletic, but intellectually challenged kid. I found some of his dialogue offensive--but it offers a good chance to talk with your kids about stereotypes. The compilation of player stats is good, but not as complete as the Baseball game offered by Humongous. A creative and fun addition is the inclusion of several NFL players (including Steve Young, Jerry Rice, Randall Cunningham, Barry Sanders, Brett Favre, and John Elway) as kids playing along with the Jr. Sports League cast. Now, not that I ever play this game, but I recommend Keisha on defense, Pete at running back, Barry Sanders at tight end, Annie as kicker.....
(I also recommend highly the Backyard Baseball Game by Humongous.)

NCAA Basketball 10 Review

NCAA Basketball 10
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
NCAA Basketball 10 has a brand new presentation system that blows most other sports games out of the water. The game is either on ESPN or CBS, each with their specific commentators and presentation styles. The game looks beautiful, the floors and players are nicely detailed.
As far as gameplay, the new motion offenses are a lot of fun to control, probably the best improvement of the game. Like all sports games, penalties and such are relatively random, which you would expect. Overall, it is very user-friendly and play calling is easy to pick up.
The best part of the game is of course dynasty mode, where you control a program for up to 30 years. I would play it just for March Madness at the end of the year, which manages to add an extra dimension of excitement on the road to the Final Four.

Wii Grand Slam Sports Pack Review

Wii Grand Slam Sports Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased 2 of these back when my wife and I bought our Wii. After playing with the sports pack for a while, we got kind of tired of it. Switching the controllers in and out was annoying, and, as other reviewers have mentioned, it's impossible to set the game up with the remote in some of the equipment (like the tennis racket). We have found the game to be much more enjoyable WITHOUT the sports pack. I wouldn't bother wasting your money on this one, personally...

SNK Arcade Classics Vol 1 Review

SNK Arcade Classics Vol 1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hello fellow Neo Geo and SNK fans.
Well we all waited for it.
Looked to be amazing!
Its not.
It fails on many many levels.
The good news first.
You get 15 games!
Neat intro and the design is pretty cool overall.
The bad news......yikes.
Every game on here is busted. There is either slowdown up the wazoo(KOF94) or there is this weird almost video refresh problem(fire up Magician Lord to see it really go nuts)
Samurai Showdown has the blood but the sound is jacked up big time.
ShockTroopers is the 1 man rom.
Baseball Stars 2 runs almost perfect but they still messed this up. Its a strange version of the ROM where all of the teams have different names(Korean or Euro I am guessing)The save option takes about 10-12 seconds everytime you change an option.
I cant believe how bad the emulation is on this.
I think they tried a little too hard to copy the way the Capcom Collections are and that "backend" is eating up too much resources and the games themselves are suffering.
Overall yeah it was only $[...] US but I really didnt expect the games to run and look like crap on here when all of the previous collections run perfect(minus Metal Slug Collection).

MLB Power Pros Review

MLB Power Pros
Average Reviews:

I just got this game a week ago. THE best baseball game on the market. It doesn't matter if you're a die - hard baseball fan or just learning the game, because its simple pick up and play controls and options make you look like you've been playing baseball all your life. The looks of the players are hilarious with just a head, torso and HUGE feet. The stadiums look almost exactly like in real life. Plus, the fast gameplay makes a 9 inning game fly by. Also, for a cartoon-ish like game, it has incredibly deep game modes. So, if your looking for some good, old-fashioned fun, this game is for YOU!

MLB Slugfest 2006 Review

MLB Slugfest 2006

Obviously the previous reviewer has never played Slugfest before, this is how it has always been a "street" style baseball game, including more mature / aggressive themes, the ability to attack other players, and urban-styled in-game commentary. Amazon's description should have eluded to the fact that this is NOT a REALISTIC Baseball game.
I enjoy beaning hitters and wondering if they will storm the mound, I actually find it hilarious, I haven't used the season mode, just exhibition games. All in all Slugfest delievers what we have come to expect from this gaming series.

Bill "Spaceman" Lee's Baseball Mogul 2009 Review

Bill Spaceman Lee's Baseball Mogul 2009
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This review is based off the demo version of Baseball Mogul 2009. This allows you to play the complete, real game through one season.
This is my first interaction with a baseball sim. I have played a lot of weak franchise modes throughout the years on consoles and the PC. I thought it would be interesting to try a franchise game with lots of depth and realism.
Baseball Mogul 2009 is actually almost too realistic, and in trying to fill all the holes it seems to forget the basics of the game.
I was astounded at the amount of options in this game. Players are rated on everything, you control prices for everything, and it even goes into detail to show you what teammates your players are friends with! You'll spend a lot of time just seeing what's available about your team.
I do appreciate that the minor league systems are accurately stocked. In previous video games, upcoming stars might be nonexistent by the release of the game. This has the important players from the rookie leagues through AAA. I also like that I don't have to manage the minor leagues to make sure they have full pitching staffs, lineups, etc. as was necessary in MVP Baseball 2004. The game allows you to auto-sort your minors to put players on the DL or on the right levels of the minors.
While the depth is incredible, the game has problems on what seems like the simplest of levels. This starts at the play by play game. It allows you to manage a game from three perspectives - player, manager, and GM. Player allows you to go through pitch by pitch. I couldn't see anyone doing this when trying to sim full seasons. Manager mode allows you to "Bat" or "Pitch" and pick options regarding the defensive alignment or stealing bases. GM just lets you watch the manager mode.
My biggest issue with these modes is that you have to watch the pitcher go through EVERY windup motion on the mound. Why can't I just click "Pitch" and see the result? Why do I have to see the guy go through his windup and the batter hit the ball in the field? Not to mention the fact that the animations in the field are pretty weak. You end up looking to the text anyway because a fly ball and a double look almost exactly the same.
The game also allows you to stretch hits into doubles or triples, or go for a Sac. Fly. Unfortunately it does this by showing you the fielder's arm and the batter's speed. Sounds simple, right? Well, when the outfielder is 270 feet from home plate with an arm of 73 and my runner is 67 feet from home with a speed of 70...uhh...uhh...you end up resorting to trial and error to see what ratings combos work.
Most people in the Moneyball era know that the goal of each game is to work the pitcher to high pitchcounts to get into middle relief - the weakest piece of most major league teams. However, I found that middle relief often SHUTS DOWN your team, while starters and setup guys are the easiest to score runs off of. Why is this the case? Starting pitchers are also most vulnerable in the first inning, and this is portrayed in the game. Usually bringing in a pitcher with guys on base gives you a bad result. Unfortunately your starting pitcher will give up first inning runs and your relief pitcher clutch base hits way too often. I know, it's realistic to have the starter weak in the first, but this doesn't have to happen every game!
I also found that injuries are too common. Maybe there is an option to turn this off, but I haven't found it. Pitchers will also get injuries on off days - this happens occasionally but again is too often in this game.
Finally, there is no easy way to view playoff statistics. In my game, Wilson Betemit of the Yankees sat on the bench most of the year and had about a .204 average. However, when getting to the playoffs, he had a hot game or two and instead of showing how well he was doing in the playoffs, I saw stuff like ".210" next to his average. I had no idea who was hot and who was not at this most important time. The only way to view playoff stats was to click on each player and scroll down to see his stats on his player card.
Another huge pain is that viewing box scores results in the game opening up windows internet explorer! What a waste of time!
I could go on, but most of the issues you'll find with this game are the same. Tons of depth, tons of options, but it leaves some simple concepts out. Even simming games can be difficult - you can't just "sim to date", you have to "sim to date then play this game"...sure, you can go to the windows toolbar and make it happen, but why so many clicks to do something so easy?
I think I'll still end up buying Baseball Mogul because it is addicting, it is mostly realistic, but you're going to wish these problems were solved - especially flaws that should've been erased years ago.
