MVP Baseball 2004 Review

MVP Baseball 2004
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I get a new PC baseball game every year. After being disappointed by the recent Triple Play and High Heat games, this MVP Baseball 2004 looked like a winner.
It almost is.
The pitching control is outstanding. The batting control is much improved. You can also control so many more facets of the game, including how and where your runners slide (to avoid the tag). You can even "railroad" the catcher.
I was one of those that were suprised that my controller (MS Sidewinder Gamepad) did not work with this game! I went out and purchased a new Logitech Dual Action Gamepad. Although there was nothing wrong with my old gamepad, I really do like this new one, and its NEEDED to fully enjoy this game (you need both analog sticks to control runners and special fielding plays).
The MVP Points system gives you something to strive for. You can unlock old-time players, stadiums, uniforms, etc.
However, the game does have some MAJOR flaws.
Playing Online: Online play is riddled with bugs. Including one that restarts your game anytime you steal a base! EA should have never shipped with this kind of bug. I'm sure there will be a patch eventually - if you can wait.
Controllers: You must own one of the following controllers
Logitech Dual Action Gamepad
Wingman Cordless Rumblepad
Wingman Rumblepad
Gravis Eliminator Aftershock
Saikek P880 controller
Playing with the keyboard is useless. I have read that you can hack your Windows registry to make your older controller work, but I'm sure you will be missing some functionality. EA should have included support for older controllers and simplified the controls for them.
Game modes: There is a "Dynasty Mode" where you build your team and progress through the years. Creating players in the minors and progressing them is useless. They will never be better than an avg. player.
It would have been nice if EA included a Single Season mode, or even a Playoff-tree mode (a la their NHL games).
When and if EA releases a patch - the game should be improved, and I would add another star.
Found yet another BUG: If you minimize the program, and then try to go back into the game, it will crash and leave you back at the desktop. I suggest you kill all other apps running (especially IMs) when playing.

MVP Baseball 2005 Review

MVP Baseball 2005
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
MVP Baseball 2005 is the closest game currently on the market to give you the most in-depth baseball experience possible. In my opinion, the only people not liking some aspects of this game will be New York Yankees fans. It's not only Manny on the cover, but also the intro video, cracks and comments throughout the games and even a song praising Boston's first title in 86 years. Well, all I can say is, if you can't overlook those things, you're missing one fantastic game. Let's break it down:
Owner Mode:
New this year is Owner Mode where you begin with picking a stadium (not one of the existing ballparks, but a starter stadium) and making a few upgrades (seating, lights, whatever you can afford before opening day). You can add a restaurant, set ticket prices, make promotional days and on and on.
You have a financial advisor for the season, budget reports, player contracts, etc. One note: Yes, you can be the owner and play the game just like you would in Dynasty Mode. You can sim, play individual games, manage the game or sit in your luxury box and watch it all take place. There is so much to this mode that I couldn't possibly fit it into this review.
Dynasty Mode:
This mode is essentially the same as last year. Keep the owner happy, the players, do contracts and play the games. It's been updated and tweaked for more user friendly experience. And I can't leave out that this year, you even have single-A teams in addition to AA, AAA, and MLB.
Mini Games:
Instead of just a Home Run Derby, EA has included a variety of features that can teach you different aspects of the game. There is batting practice, pitching practice and also a scenario editor. To me, I found it to be an enjoyable experience especially when hitting the cars and busses over the outfield wall. This seems like a throw back to Triple-Play 2000 when you had target practice.
Graphics:
Simply amazing. Need I say more? The players faces and stances are mirrored to their real-life counterparts. Cutscenes, and animations are gorgeous. The only thing I found a proble with was the crowd...even in 2005, they are still wooden-looking. That's a sacrifice you have to make and it doesn't detract from the game experience.
Gameplay:
What a shift from last year! Pitching is now a lot more realistic with the way you use the meter. Instead on the old meter where you set power and tried to hit right spot, they have upgraded it to you having to stop it and exactly the right moment, if not, you risk and early or late breaking pitch. In rookie mode, it's not as big of a deal as it is in MVP mode. Make some mistake pitches in the higher levels and you're asking for trouble.
Batting is great! When you foul off a pitch, a little screen comes up and shows you how you hit it. Fouling off a pitch is a mistimed swing, same as a swing through. Gone is the animation where you swung, missed the ball and it popped up the crazy box to show you missing it. Instead, this year, they have the popup box, yet include the ball trail so you see how you missed it.
Fielding & baserunning is comparable to last years version with some great upgrades to visuals. There are plenty of dives, showboating grabs, wall jumps, and take-out slides.
Ok, I could go on & on with this review because, like I said, this is the most in-depth baseball game I have ever seen. If you want the best out there, MVP Baseball 2005 hits a Home Run. See you ONLINE for a head-to-head contest!

I have read the review that other's wrote and I still bought the game. Everyone complains that there are no crowd chants or school fight songs, etc. Let me ask you something, Have you ever been to a college baseball game? THEY DON'T PLAY FIGHT SONGS!!!!! If the game had that it would be annoying and corny.
This game is a ton of fun. It's very realistic and challenging. Sure you can creat players, blow out there rankings and make them a superstar... You will win the College World Series if you do that. If you like baseball games the way they are meant to be, then you will love this one.
There is only one con about the game. I mean only one! When you think that you have squeeked on by the computer for a base hit, they will make a tremendous play and get you out... That can be a little frustrating, but that's baseball. Everything else is awesome. I think this game is a must buy...
Dynasty mode is the way to go... Recruiting can be tough, but don't worrry, you will get transfers! If you start a dynasty with a terrible team or create your own school, you will get transfers to help your program.
If you like a challenge and you are a true baseball fan, then you need this game. The rest of the reviews are for those that want to open the game and win the college world series in 4 seasons... That's not even fun...

MLB 11: The Show Review

MLB 11: The Show
Average Reviews:

I'm playing a season in rookie mode and I've lost 5 straight after winning 5 straight. I'm not new to baseball games, been playing them since '95. Even in rookie mode, the computer makes ridiculous catches. Pitchers can sometimes get really wild until you're forced to throw a fastball right down the middle of the plate which will get rocked. Fielding can get tricky at times. You press the button to throw to the base but the fielder will just stand there and not throw the ball. Pitchers don't last very long.
Hitting is fun but my pet peeve is how the hitters will pop out harmlessly so often. The strike zone is quite inconsistent as well. Even the announcers will talk about the strike zone!
For a portable system, the graphics are very good. The attention to detail on the player batting stances is really cool.

MVP Baseball 2004 for Xbox Review

MVP Baseball 2004 for Xbox
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This game is one of the best baseball games that I have ever played. And I've played since triple play 95 for the computer. For starters, there are great gameplay additions that make the game seem like a real ballpark experience. Some of them include, broken bats where they show replays to see which part of the bat broke, grass and dirt stains depending on where you choose to slide i.e legs, chest, crowd chants for certain players ex: Carlos Beltran- "Over-rated" and the Braves Tomohawk chop chant. Also there are multiple swing styles which gives you the ability to homer on any pitch but the chances of doing it on a low pitch on the outside if you are looking to pull it are very minimal.
There are some problems with the game but they are very small. For example, I was pitching in the 9th inning with Jason Davis of the indians and he routinely threw 97 mph every fastball even with 34% stamina. He should have been throwing 84 or so. Also, I have found it very hard to steal bases because if you try and take a lead, he continues to side-step even after the pitch and therefore gets a late jump and usually gets thrown out. In addition, there are very few errors on groundballs because many errors are throwing errors. Lastly, I have noticed that the schedule does not coincide with the actual major league schedule. For example, I played 4 to 5 1:00 games in a row when they all should have been 7:05 starts i.e. April 19, 20, 21.
Overall, I'd say this game is still the best out as I have seen previews and played advance copies of the other 2 games ( ESPN and ASB) and they don't stack up to this game. Even with the minimal problems this game is still the best of this years crop of baseball games and the pros far outweigh the cons.
P.S I am not an E.A fan as I had ESPN World Series Baseball last year and All-Star Baseball 2003 before this.

MLB Power Pros 2008 Review

MLB Power Pros 2008
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, this is the best baseball game out there for the wii. Plenty of game modes, including exhibition, batting practice, fielding practice, home run derby, 162 game season mode, a 6-team round robin league mode, and 2 rpg-like modes: MLB Life, and Success mode.
I spend about 95% of my time in season mode. There is plenty to do, although almost nothing has changed in season mode since last year. One thing in particular that I still like is the different simulation modes, where you can essentially let the computer play all the games, with the option to stop play before any batter and take control yourself. This can make it possible to play many games in a short amount of time each day. Season mode keeps stats in at least 50 different categories and allows you to sort by stat, by team, by division, by league...and also keeps all-time records. You can buy special bats and gloves, etc, to help your players practice more efficiently and raise their abilities between games (although progress takes time, a lot of time).
The batting practice mode is pretty cool too. You can customize the pitches that are thrown by pitcher, type and location, so you can work on hitting just inside curveballs if you want.
There are lots of frills like baseball cards with player bios and player batting and pitching stances/styles, and fictional stadiums that you can purchase with "frequent player points". There is the ability to create "arrange" teams with custom players, or to keep rosters updated. You can adjust the players abilities also and use these arranged teams in your season. I guess you could do this every year so that rosters are kept up-to-date. You can even create a 32 team league, and edit the team colors, uniform and mascot of a couple expansion teams.
I cannot comment too much on MLB life, and Success mode except that I found them a little tedious and frustrating. This is unfortunate because Success mode is the only way to add custom players, and there is no guarantee that the player you create will even "succeed" and be able to play on your season team. (It takes about an hour or two, and your success is based on maybe 3 games or 9 to 12 plate appearances).
So, here is what is still lacking, in my opinion (I hope the game designers are reading):
- The CPU never walks a batter. This is NOT realistic.
- The CPU never *intentionally* walks a batter. Players like Pujols, Manny, Arod, etc should not be pitched to with a base open late in a close game. It should not be too hard to add a heuristic here. I've seen it done in some other baseball games.
- The CPU makes odd managerial decisions. A pitcher will bat late in the game, only to be replaced at the start of the next inning.
- I've found that the stats are a little skewed to the extremes...good players are monsterous, and mediocre/bad players are terrible. Even after tinkering with the difficulty levels.
- You cannot set default lineups for right-hand pitchers/left-hand pitchers. It allows you to set default lineups for DH/non-DH, so why not by opposing pitchers' throwing hand?
- I would really like to see this game give you an "official boxscore" of the format found in newspapers and mlb.com. You should be able to view it throughout the course of the game. This would be neat.
- The play by play announcer is TERRIBLE. There are many many audio bugs where he calls players by the wrong name, and calls the play wrong too. I usually listen to my ipod and keep the game audio muted. That being said this is still a great great baseball game that would be worthy of 5 stars if some of the bad things I mentioned were not so.

Backyard Baseball 2005 Review

My eight-year-old daughter and I both really enjoy this new Backyard Sports title from Humongous. I wasn't sure that I would like the change from the 2-D animated style of their previous games, but they kept the wacky cartoony flavor in the 3-D models, and having the camera fly around the fields is pretty cool. The fields aren't ordinary baseball fields--the kids play in an Everglades swamp, in a southwestern desert, and on a midwestern farm complete with a tornado and crop circles. We both really enjoy the humor of this game. I especially like the color commentary by Abner Doubleplay. My daughter enjoys the crazy power-up pitches.
We have an older Nvidia Gforce 3 card and have had no problems. I have heard that some older video cards aren't supported by the latest DirectX from Microsoft. Maybe that is the problem some people are having. I've always found Atari's tech support helpful when I gave them a call, though I haven't had to in a while.
The only reason I'm not giving this five stars is that I wanted to play with my gamepad, and the button mapping is quite awkward. Unlike other games I have that say they support controllers, there doesn't seem to be any way to remap the buttons. So we just use the mouse and keyboard. (My daughter doesn't mind. I'm the one who plays console sports games, so I'm used to a gamepad.)

Do not purchase this item unless you know absolutley nothing about baseball. Two stadiums, no season play, can not shift infield or outfield, cannot dive for a ball and the graphics are circa colecovision. I was fortunte I was able to return this product. It is a shame, the DS offered so much potential for a baseball game and now we will have to wait who know's how many years for a new game.
I would have been happy if they would have re released Triple Play for the Genesis.

This game is my childhood. I played this game so much as a kid. It was fun then and it's still damn fun now. I don't care what age you are, you will love this game. Although the above reviewer may disagree, the powerups add to the game immensely, since it's a less serious atmosphere than normal baseball (and is better for it). If you go into the game expecting pure fun rather than a nitty-gritty simulation, you will love it to death.

Major League Baseball 2K6 Review

Major League Baseball 2K6
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before I purchased the game initially I read some of the reviews on amazon.com. To be honest I really didn't care what anyone had to say because I knew that I would purchase it regardless. However, people made some important insights.
Cons- There are certain flaws in the gameplay. For example the commentators tend to say the wrong thing at times; things that aren't even close to the situation. Another con I would say is that the controls are pretty difficult. Things that were basic in the EA sports versions are made much more complicated in this game.
Pros- Despite the cons, I absolutely love this game. I'm not a gamer at all; I only buy sports games, and even then I'm pretty amature. After practicing for a bit, you start getting a hang of the controls. Pitching is a blast in my opinion. Once you understand that you need to place the cursor where you want it to break you can go nuts with it. Offensively the swing stick (once you get the hang of it) can be a lot of fun. Trying to guess the pitch also becomes fun as you get the hang of the game. Plus the graphics are insanely good. Each player's tendencies are almost spot on.
The reason I rated the game so high is because when you get a better hang of the controls the game allows you to control every aspect of the game. I disliked the game immensely when I first bought it, but after giving it a chance, I'm hooked. The more I play I learn new controls that make the gameplay so much fun. Just force yourself to give it a chance and get into each pitch, each at bat, and this is an amazingly fun game.

Backyard Sports: Baseball 2007 Review

Backyard Sports: Baseball 2007

This product was just horrible in every respect.
Start Up
This game does not install, but instead plays straight off the CD-ROM. I put the disk in the CD-ROM drive, and it spins away, but isn't read. I go online, and there is a feeble help section on the Atari/Humongous site, which basically tells me to update all of my drivers. I update all of the drivers (and I do mean all) and still the disk spins but isn't read. (And no other CD or CD-ROM gives me trouble.) But... strangely, when I put the disk in the DVD drive sometimes the drive reads the disk, and sometimes it doesnt. Either way though, the game will not start up. But, when the DVD drive does read the disk, I am able to navigate through the disk, and double click the program file and start the game.
Game Play
We have several other versions of Backyard Baseball, and this one is just pathetic. Much worse both in terms of game play and graphics than versions 5 years older. And as if that wasn't bad enough, the hitting is very hard to master, so that your child's frustration level soon goes off the chart.
Customer Support
Emailed customer support for help in getting the game to start up normally. Got an automated response that they were migrating their customer support and would be offline for some time. WHO MIGRATES THEIR CUSTOMER SUPPORT DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON?
Then when I do finally get a response from Atari it is to tell me that they no longer support the title and refer me to the Backyard Sports web site. Which has a meager Technical FAQ section, and no way to contact them for further assistance.
This is absolutely the worst PC game and worst customer experience I have ever had in 20+ years of PC gaming.

I must begin this review by saying I am an avid fan of the EA MVP Baseball series, and I am still getting over the fact that 2k took over the MLB license. I bought the NCAA game, enjoyed it greatly, but still missed my Pro team and recognizing the players. This game is a huge step up from last years release. The gameplay has improved and I love having my pro teams, but there are still some problems.
It looks like they did not improve on the graphics at all. Probably set aside because Xbox will be gone soon anyway. The announcers still call out errors that never happened or recap scenarios from earlier in the game that never took place. It can get annoying when almost everyone has been "thrown out at second trying to extend the single to a double."
At this point though, I am happy with the game. I like having my pro team back, and it is only a matter of time before I turn it all in for the 360. It is definitely worth the 29.00 for the game.
